The Pittsburgh Pirates today announced they have claimed outfielder Xavier Paul off waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers. To make room on the 40-man roster for Paul, the Pirates have transferred pitcher Scott Olsen from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.

The 26-year-old Paul was a member of Los Angeles’ Opening Day roster this year and went 3-for-14 with a homer and RBI in 11 games before being designated for assignment on April 18.

The left-handed hitting Paul was originally selected by Los Angeles (NL) in the fourth round of the 2003 First-Year Player Draft and made his Major League debut with the Dodgers in 2009. He was recognized by Baseball America as having the “Best Outfield Arm” in the Los Angeles organization for six consecutive years (2004-2009).

Paul hit .325 (74-for-228) with 20 doubles, one triple, 12 home runs, 38 RBI and a .579 slugging percentage in 57 games with Triple-A Albuquerque in 2010. He also had three separate stints with the Dodgers and hit .231 (28-for-121) in 44 big league games.

The Pirates will make a corresponding roster move on the 25-man roster once Paul reports to Pittsburgh.
