Cubs May 14 Minor League Recap

Tennessee used a two-out bunt single from Arismendy Alcantara to beat Jackson in late innings for the second straight night. Iowa, Daytona and Kane County all dropped their games.

Tennessee 3, Jackson 2—10 innings

Arismendy Alcantara's RBI bunt single in the top of the tenth scored Tim Torres who led off with a walk as Tennessee (19-18) beat Jackson (15-21)

At the Plate: Alcantara's RBI ground ball out in the fourth tied the game at 1-1 and then Christian Villanueva gave the Smokies a 2-1 advantage with his second homer of the season. Torres led off the 10th with a walk and went to second on Matt Szczur's third hit of the game. A fielder's choice put runners on first and third, setting the stage for Alcantara's game winning hit. Villanueva added a double and walked.

On the Mound: Alberto Cabrera worked seven strong innings yielding five hits and one earned run, a solo homer. He walked one and fanned seven. RHP Marcus Hatley tossed a 1-2-3 eight but Zach Rosscup got his first blown save, allowing two hits and a walk as the Generals tied the game in the ninth. Rosscup got the win as Frank Batista pitched a perfect 10th for his fourth save.

Reno 11, Iowa 1

Reno (14-26) pounded out 19 hits to split the four-game series with Iowa (14-22)

At the Plate: Iowa managed seven hits but their only run came in the fourth when Brian Bogusevic (2-4) and Brad Nelson (2-4) hit back-to-back doubles. 3B Ian Stewart went 1-3 with a double and Brett Jackson had a infield single.

On the Mound: RHP Barret Loux (2-2 8.22 ERA) got roughed up for nine hits and seven earned runs in 3.1 IP. The right-hander gave up five straight hits to start the second as the Reno scored three times. Loux had two quality starts (10 IP 9H 1R 11K) in mid April but has allowed 25 hits in his last 12 innings. RHP Yoanner Negrin (0-1 2.66) pitched in his 12th game working 2.2 IP. He surrendered six hits and three runs, two earned with a walk and three strikeouts. He's fanned 31 in 23.2 innings. LHP Hisanori Takahashi pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the seventh, his seventh game since being sent down from Chicago. Takahashi had surrender four runs in his last 3.2 innings. Casey Coleman (0-0 4.15 ) worked an inning allowing three hits and a run.

Iowa Notes: The I-Cubs have the day off as they return to Principal Park for a 13-game home stand. They face Tucson (May 16-19), Las Vegas (May 20-23) and Oklahoma City (May 24-27).

Charlotte 4, Daytona 2

Daytona (17-18) dropped their second straight home game falling to Charlotte (14-23).

At the Plate: Daytona only got four hits off Stone Crab pitching and walked just once. C Chad Noble knocked in John Anderoli with a RBI single in the fifth and Jorge Soler scored Zeke DeVoss with a sacrifice fly in the sixth.

On the Mound: Ben Wells (3-2 3.98) pitched shutout ball for five innings but didn't get out of the sixth allowing a single and double and left with one out and runners on second and third. Wells went 5.1 innings, allowed six hits and two earned runs. He walked one and struck out a season-high seven. Jeffrey Lorick got the final two outs of the sixth but not before allowing a two-run single. After the Cubs tied the game, Eduardo Figueroa (0-2 3.06 ERA) took the loss allowing two runs on two hits and two walks in the seventh. Austin Reed (0-0 6.75) tossed two scoreless innings and it was his fifth straight outing without allowing a run.

Peoria 8, Kane County 4

Kane County (17-18) pitchers allowed 12 hits as Peoria (18-17) scored two runs in four different innings.

At the Plate: Kane County got on the board in the second after a Rock Shoulders double and a sacrifice fly from Bijan Rademacher. C Wilson Contreras tied the game with a homer in the fourth. Shoulders added two more RBI to his season total with a two-run single in the fifth to tie the game at 4-4. Shoulders (.315) and Contreras (.284) had two hits each and Gioskar Amaya walked twice.

On the Mound: Ian Dickson (1-1 6.41 ERA) made his third start of the season allowing two earned runs in four innings on five hits and a walk. The right-hander fanned four. Justin Amlung (3-1 4.50) got the loss as he gave up four runs, three earned in three innings. Amlung allowed five hits and one walk to go along with two punchouts. Stephen Perakslis (0-2 5.94) surrendered two runs on two hits in his two innings.
