Salt River scored three against Mesa's bullpen to edge the Solar Sox 3-2 on the road. The Rafters' fourth consecutive victory moves the second-place club (8-9) to within 2 ½ of first-place Mesa in the Arizona Fall League East standings.
It was a pitching duel through six as neither side could break onto the scoreboard. That changed in the seventh when the visitors grouped together two hits, a stolen base and a sac fly to go up 2-0. A two-out double in the eighth placed number three hitter Jake Lamb (ARI) in position to take advantage of Stephen Piscotty's only hit of the game. Piscotty lined a single up the middle to drive in what proved to be the difference. The right fielder flew out to center in his initial two at bats, the first time with a runner at first, and ground out to short in the sixth.
Rafters' hurlers combined for a five-hitter with each pitcher allowing a hit during his time on the bump. Southpaw Tyler Matzek (W, 1-1) was the pitcher of record when Salt River tallied in the seventh. The Rockies prospect tossed 1 2/3 innings in relief of starter Aaron Sanchez. Sanchez (TOR) went the first 4 1/3, yielding a hit and three base-on-balls while striking out four. Righty Jake Barrett (ARI) worked around a lead-off single in the ninth for his second save.
Lee Stoppelman pitched the eighth and was scored upon for the first time in 5 1/3 frames covering five appearances. The lefty issued a free pass to the lead-off batter but retired the next two batters via a swinging K and line out to center. Stoppelman was unable to get past Mesa's number three batter and could only watch as one of his pitches sailed over the wall in right center. He recovered to record a line out to left for the third out.
Tuesday's game: vs. Mesa (10-6), 7:35 pm CT, Grayson Garvin (TB) (1-2, 5.11)
