Mackowiak Working Hard For 2005

Rob Mackowiak is pleasantly surprised. <br><br> Mackowiak might get the chance to shed his super utility player label this spring with the Pirates and win the starting center-field job. Manager Lloyd McClendon said incumbent Tike Redman and Mackowiak will compete for the position during the exhibition season.

Though considered a utility player during most of his four years in the major leagues, Mackowiak would love nothing more than to be in the Opening Day lineup. "Everybody who plays this game wants that opportunity," Mackowiak said. "It's been something I've been looking for ever since I got to the big leagues."
