Q&A with Matt Lawton

Posted Apr 3, 2005

GVB: Matt, Spring Training is moving down the home stretch here. First of all, how are you fitting in with your new club?

Lawton: Actually, I think things are starting to come together, starting to get to know my teammates pretty well. In the outfield, getting to know the guys' range. Castillo, the second baseman, and Tike Redman, stuff like that. We're a good clubhouse. The guys are young and really hungry and bring a lot of energy to the ballpark. I think it's gonna be a lot of fun.

GVB: There's been a lot of talk when I was talking to some of the other players about the chemistry, and I guess you're just starting to find out about that right now. Most of the other guys say there's a good chemistry.

Lawton: Yeah, I think so. You've got a great nucleus. Starting pitching is definitely going to be our strength. We'll go as far as those guys take us. The bullpen's pretty solid. Hopefully, the offense can continue to score some runs.

GVB: Tell the fans a little bit about Matt Lawton, what he brings to the table. What do you think you bring to the table?

Lawton: I think I'm a guy who's gonna try to get on base a lot, try to steal some bases here and there, put the ball in the gaps, try to score some runs, just a lot of the little things it takes to win the ballgame. I think that's one of the main reasons they brought me here. Hopefully I can continue, hopefully my game will take off, and, like I said, we'll have a good time.

GVB: Everybody talks about the pitching on this ball club. A lot of guys have said that if the pitching's healthy, you can win some games.

Lawton: Yeah, that's what it's going to take. I'm gonna be honest with you, this is definitely going to be one of the toughest divisions in baseball, so we're gonna have to be on the top of our game and we'll have to stay healthy, just like you said. We can't have any injuries. We have to stay solid as a team. I think this team takes pretty good care of themselves. You're gonna have freak things happen here and there, but if we can stay injury-free, who knows? We could move past some people.

GVB: Matt, I appreciate the time.

Lawton: Thanks for having me.
