Bay and Sanchez All-Stars

Posted Jul 3, 2006

The Pittsburgh Pirates own the worst record in the major leagues. Yet, even though they are on a pace for their worst record since the early 1950’s they managed to earn two representatives to the National League All-Star team for the July 11 game at PNC Park.

Outfielder Jason Bay was voted into the National League starting lineup third baseman Freddy Sanchez who is batting .363 was selected by NL manager Phil Garner.

That gives the Pirates two representatives for the first time since 2000 and the last-place Pirates will have as many All-Star representatives as the Detroit Tigers, who have the best record in the major leagues.

Bay is the first Pirates player voted by the fans as a NL starter since outfielder Andy Van Slyke in 1993. He will be the first to start in an All-Star Game in Pittsburgh since third baseman Bob Elliott in 1944. Last season Bay was the only NL position player not to play in the game in Detroit.

“It was great last year being chosen (as a reserve), but this is more of a national thing, to be voted in,” Bay said. “That makes it a bigger deal. It’s flattering. And I’m pumped because Freddy will be there too.”

Sanchez, considered a bench player when spring training broke, was thrilled with his selection to the All-Star Game.

"Awesome, great, it's unbelievable," said Sanchez, 28. "I went from not knowing how many at-bats I would get coming off the bench to this ... I can't even describe it."
