Maholm Seeking Consistency

Paul Maholm pitched the first complete-game shutout of his career in the Pirates' 3-0 victory over the Houston Astros Tuesday at PNC Park. The lefty is hoping to get on a roll after tossing the three-hit gem. PiratesDugout.com's George Von Benko spoke with Maholm.

GVB-- Reflecting on your performance that first pitch is so important for you isn't it?

PM-- Yeah it is. As long as I can get ahead and prove that I'm around the zone so that I can get them to swing at my pitch and not get behind 2-1 or 3-1 and have to just groove one. They are big league hitters and they're going to punish that. Hopefully I can just continue to get ahead and throw the sinker down in the zone.
