The Pittsburgh Pirates selected right-handed pitcher Evan Meek off Tampa Bay’s Triple-A roster in the Major League Phase of the Rule Five Draft.

Meek, 24, went 2-1 with a 4.30 ERA (67.0ip/32er) and 69 strikeouts in 44 relief appearances with Double-A Montgomery in 2007. He also posted a 0.93 ERA (9.2ip/1er) in nine relief appearances for the Scottsdale Scorpions in this year’s Arizona Fall League.

Originally drafted by Minnesota in the 11th round of the 2002 draft, the native of Bellevue, WA, has posted a career record of 16-12 in 114 appearances (39 starts) during his minor league career.

To make room on the 40-man roster, the Pirates unconditionally released infielder Jose Castillo. The club’s roster is currently at 40 players.
