Pirates Prospect Interview: Patrick Bresnehan

Patrick Bresnehan

Right-handed pitcher Patrick Bresnehan posted a 4-3 record with a 4.18 ERA in 34 games at Single A Lynchburg and also recorded six saves. The 22-year-old also pitched in three games at Double A Altoona and was 1-0 with a 4.50 ERA. In a stint that was cut short by injury in the Arizona Fall League he went 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA. PiratesDugout.com's George Von Benko spoke with Bresnehan recently.

GVB-- Were happy with your performance this past season in the minor leagues?

PB-- Overall I was happy with it. I didn't finish quite as strong as I would've liked. I had a real good season going up until about August and then I had a few bad outings. It kind of hurt me, but I was able to get back on track towards the end of August and threw pretty well at Altoona. So overall I'm happy with it, but I would have liked to have finished a little stronger.

GVB-- The ERA was a little high, but coming out of the bullpen it can balloon quickly right?

PB-- Yeah, that's kind of what happened. I was doing real well until that two week span where I couldn't get anybody out and it did a number on my numbers.

GVB-- You did pitch in the Arizona Fall League. How did you pitch in Arizona?

PB-- In Arizona I threw the ball really well, but unfortunately I ended up getting hurt about two and a half weeks into it. I pulled a groin, which was more of a nuisance than anything, but it kept me from throwing as much as I would have liked.

GVB-- Were you trying to work on anything specific out in Arizona and it was great competition out there wasn't it?

PB-- Yeah, it's an awesome experience out there. I'm always trying to work on my fastball control and making that as consistent as possible. That's a key for me and doing it day in and day out is the kind of thing I've been having trouble with. Three or times I will throw the ball well and then I will have one where I don't. I'm just trying to piece together what causes those inconsistencies and correct them.

GVB-- What else do you throw in addition to the fastball?

PB-- I throw a slider, curveball and change up.

GVB-- How do you feel about those pitches?

PB-- My change is still a work in progress. I use it pretty sparingly. Overall this year I was pretty happy with my slider - it was a good out pitch for me and good for a get me over strike. My curveball was on and off.

GVB-- This will be an interesting spring training for you.

PB-- It should be fun. I don't know what to expect going into it with all the new personnel we have in the front office. I'm excited about it and I'm ready to get going again.

GVB-- You had a brief stint at Double A Altoona last season. Is that where you are hoping to start out this season?

PB-- They really haven't said anything. I really loved Altoona the two weeks I was there. It was a great experience and a great place to play. It would be a great place to play again next year - we'll see
