John Van Benschoten

The Pirates outrighted four pitchers, including 2001 top draft pick John Van Benschoten, to Class AAA Indianapolis, and removed them from the team's 40-man roster.

In addition to Van Benschoten, who struggled at the major league level again this past season, right-handers Yoslan Herrera, Marino Salas and Ronald Belisario were outrighted to Indianapolis. Only Belisario did not pitch for the Pirates in 2008.

The moves leave the Pirates with 36 players on their 40-man roster. At some point, the Pirates will have to add back pitchers Tom Gorzelanny and Phil Dumatrait, who currently are on the 60-day disabled list.
