Pirates Sign Haigwood

The Pittsburgh Pirates signed left-handed pitcher Daniel Haigwood to a minor league contract with an invitation to big league camp in spring training.

Haigwood went 2-3 with one save and a 3.36 ERA (67.0ip/25er) in 38 games (three starts) during the 2008 season with Portland (Red Sox' AA). He went 1-2 with one save and a 3.42 ERA (55.1ip/21er) in 35 relief appearances and 1-1 with a 3.09 ERA (11.2ip/4er) in three starts. Haigwood was originally selected by the Chicago White Sox in the 16th round of the 2002 draft.

Jorge Bishop (SS) - Signed as a non-drafted free agent to the Venezuelan Summer League Pirates.
November 21
Maiko Loyola (OF) - Signed as a minor league free agent to Triple-A Indianapolis. Loyola hit .280 (132-for-471) with 20 doubles, three triples, five home runs and 44 RBI in 122 games with Single-A Columbus of the South Atlantic League in 2008. He was also named to the South Atlantic League mid-season All-Star team. Loyola was originally signed by Pittsburgh as a non-drafted free agent on 5/23/02. He played in the Pirates minor league system from 2002-05 before being selected by Tampa Bay in the Triple-A phase of the Rule Five Draft on 12/8/05.
