The Pittsburgh Pirates have announced that top-rated prospect Pedro Alvarez will be promoted to Altoona and be on the team’s roster for their 7:05 p.m. contest at Erie on Tuesday night at Jerry Uht Park.

Alvarez was the Pirates’ first-round draft choice (second overall) out of Vanderbilt University in the 2008 June Draft and is rated the Pirates’ No. 1 prospect in organization’s farm system by

“Naturally, we’re excited about Pedro’s promotion to the Curve,” said Altoona Curve General Manager Rob Egan. “He’s the highest-profile prospect we’ve ever had and that’s saying something because of all of really good ones that have played here the last 11 seasons. I’m sure Curve fans will be eager to see him perform at Blair County Ballpark.

Alvarez, 21, made his professional debut with the Lynchburg Hillcats (A- Advanced, Carolina League) and proceeded to hit .247 with 14 HR and 55 RBIs in 66 games played. Alvarez also drew 37 walks. His 55 RBIs was tops in the Carolina League while his 14 home runs ranks second. The New York City native also started 58 of the 66 games at third base where he committed 13 errors. Alvarez served as a designated hitter in the other eight games.

The Pirates also have announced they will promote three other players. OF/1B Miles Durham (.296, 7 HR, 39 RBIs) will report to the team after he represents the Lynchburg Hillcats in the California-Carolina League All Star game on the West Coast on June 23. Durham, 26, the Pirates’ 22nd round selection in the June 2006 draft is currently leading the Carolina League in hits (73).

Also joining the Curve will be right-handers Dustin Molleken (3-1, 3.48 ERA in 18 games) and Michael Dubee (2-1, 1.45 ERA in 28 games). Molleken, 24, was the Pirates’ 15th round selection in the 2003 June Draft while Dubee was acquired by Pittsburgh in a trade with the Chicago White Sox in April. Dubee, 23, was originally drafted in the 18th round in 2006 by the Philadelphia Phillies.

Additional roster moves to clear space for the new additions have yet to be announced and will be announced officially in the near future.
