Yates Undergoes Successful Surgery

The Pittsburgh Pirates announced that right-handed pitcher Tyler Yates had successful Tommy John surgery yesterday afternoon to repair a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow.

Yates, who has been on the 15-day disabled list since May 16 with right-elbow inflammation, will miss the remainder of the 2009 season.

Dr. James Andrews performed the surgery yesterday afternoon in Birmingham, Alabama. Yates will return to Bradenton to continue with his rehab and expects to return to a throwing program in 5 to 6 months.
