A hematoma is defined as a mass of blood, usually clotted, that forms in a tissue, organ or body space.
"We are encouraged about his health, and that's ultimately what matters," Bucs farm director Kyle Stark said.
The injury is not expected to be career threatening.
"We sent him to the hospital to get checked out [Monday] night," Stark said. "They found some internal issues, a hematoma, and decided that they needed to operate."
Negrych in a statement released by the Curve is very appreciative of the outpouring of support, thoughts, prayers, and overall support that the passionate people of Altoona will offer as he heals.
“The people in Altoona have been unbelievable towards me and I’m very grateful of them,” Negrych said.
Negrych, 24, was the Pirates’ sixth round selection in the 2006 June draft out of the University of Pittsburgh. The Buffalo, NY native was the Pirates’ 2008 Minor League Player of the season after ranking fifth among all full-season Minor Leaguers after he hit a combined .359 with the Lynchburg Hillcats (Advanced – A) and Altoona with 41 doubles, five home runs and 72 RBIs in 129 total games.
This season, Negrych is hitting .272 with 3 home runs and 30 RBIs in 93 games played.
"It's a big loss," Altoona manager Matt Walbeck said. "He was a great hitter at the top of our order, he was a great teammate, and he leads by example."
