"We feel very good about adding Joey to our system," said Pirates Senior Vice President and General Manager Neal Huntington. "Joey brings the tools, athleticism, and make-up we are looking for at the catching position. We feel strongly that Joey will be a positive influence in working with the young arms we've added through the draft."
Schoenfeld, who was committed to play for San Diego State University before signing with the Pirates, hit .385 (30-for-78) with nine doubles, one triple, three home runs, 15 RBI, 28 runs scored and eight stolen bases as a senior this year.
Inman finished a standout career at Garces Memorial (CA) High School after posting a 1.95 ERA and 79 strikeouts and just six walks in 50.1 innings as a senior. Following his first year of collegiate ball, he was named Stanford's Most Outstanding Freshman after posting a 4-4 record and 62 strikeouts in 15 games (13 starts).
As a sophomore at Stanford, the 6-foot-3 righthander finished second on the team's College World Series staff in wins, innings and starts after going 7-2 with a 4.27 ERA (71.2ip/34er) in 16 games (13 starts). Following his sophomore campaign with the Cardinal, Inman was tabbed by Baseball America as the ninth-best prospect in the Cape Cod League after he went 1-1 with a 3.73 ERA in six starts with the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox.
He entered his junior season this year on the 50-player watch list for the Golden Spikes Award (top player in college baseball) and was a third-team preseason All-America selection by Baseball America. The 21-year-old Inman ended his career at Stanford with a 13-12 record in 42 games, including a 20-17 mark in his 37 starting assignments.
"Jeff brings a combination of solid arm action and delivery with quality stuff in the package of a three-pitch mix," said Huntington. "We are pleased to have the opportunity to develop him in maximizing his pitching potential."
With the signing of Schoenfeld and Inman, the Pirates have now signed 23 of their 51 selections from this year's draft, including each of their first 14 selections.
