Beam replaces Bucs starter Phil Dumatrait who was placed on the disabled list because of a left shoulder injury.
“He had some tendonitis in his shoulder," Pirates Manager John Russell explained. "It’s been a little achy the last couple of weeks. We’re going to err on the side of caution. We don’t want it to linger. With the time off, he should get some much-needed strength back in there.”
Dumatrait's next scheduled start had been Wednesday against the New York Yankees. Zach Duke, who had been set for Thursday, could be pushed up a day because of the day off tomorrow. It is unclear what would happen beyond that.
“We need a starter on Saturday," Russell said. "That gives us six days to make a decision. Neal Huntington and I will talk and see what to do for Saturday. Phil can come back on the fifth in Milwaukee. It might have affected him in Chicago. Also, I’m sure mentally it was in the back of mind. We need to get his shoulder back to where it needs to be. The condition hadn’t shows up before.”
In 26 Triple-A relief appearances this season, Beam turned in a 2-1 record, 2.03 ERA, four saves, 39 strikeouts and .201 batting average against.

Pittsburgh will need to make a roster move, the 40-man roster currently is full, a player will have to be removed or placed on the 60-day disabled list. The only player on the 15-day disabled list is center fielder Chris Duffy, now on a rehabilitation stint with Class AA Altoona.
