Hill, 56, has spent 14 years in the Major Leagues as a coach, most recently with the Florida Marlins
as their First Base and Infield Coach from 2002-2006. A valued and well-respected infield instructor,
Hill has coached Rawlings Gold Glove award winners at all four infield positions during his career:
1B Derrek Lee (2003), 2B Luis Castillo (2003-05), 3B Mike Lowell (2005) and SS Orlando Cabrera
(2001).
“We are very pleased to add Perry Hill to our Major League Coaching staff,” said Huntington. “Perry
is well respected and widely regarded as one of the best infield instructors in professional baseball
and his track record of teaching infield defense is second to none. His teaching abilities and 23 years
of coaching experience will have a positive impact on our Major League players, coaching staff and
our Player Development system.”
Hill began his coaching career in the Texas Rangers organization with Class-A Tri Cities in 1984.
He spent 13 seasons with Texas (1984-1996), including four at the Major League level as the First
Base Coach and Infield Instructor (1992-95).
In his three seasons as Detroit’s Third Base and Infield Coach (1997-99), Hill led the ’97 squad to
the American League’s top fielding mark as the Tigers became the first team ever to go from worst
to first in fielding percentage in consecutive seasons.
Prior to joining the Marlins in 2002, Hill spent the 2000 and 2001 campaigns as the First Base and
Infield Coach for the Montreal Expos, where he guided the development of shortstop Orlando
Cabrera, who collected his first Rawlings Gold Glove in 2001.
